10 Target Money-Saving Secrets

It pays to know Target's shopping secrets!

 

  • Use the scanner.Sometimes the clearance team misses an item that should have been re-stickered with a lower price.  If it is something you want, always check the price with a scanner.  Also, scan things that are one of a kind. These things may be returns from previous seasons that have been clearanced out. You may be surprised!
  • Look for repackaged items. These items could be something that was purchased online and returned to the store, or simply a return without a box. 
  • Learn to read the red stickers. Red stickers appear on all clearance deals at Target.  The original price appears on the top right corner along with a number such as, “15, 30, 50″ etc.  This is the percentage it has been marked down.
  • “As Is” According to a Target associate, the items that are clearance labeled “AS IS” is just a fancy way of saying Target doesn’t carry this product anymore and they need to get it out of the store.
  • Keep your receipts. Target has a strict return policy which limits the returns you can make without a receipt ($75 per year).  However, there is a way around this. The store tracks every credit card purchase. If you can remember which credit card you purchased the item with, the store can look up the transaction by simply swiping your card and scanning the item. If they find the transaction, they will let you return the item without the physical receipt.  If you do have your receipt, Target will adjust the prices on items that go on sale (not clearanced) within 14 days of the purchase.
  • Check out the Target REDcard. Target introduced its REDcard in fall 2010.  Cardholders will receive 5% off when they use the Target REDcard debit card, or 5% cash back with the Target REDcard credit card.  Details here.
  • Take advantage of Target’s price matching policy. If you find an item in a competitor’s ad, bring it to Target and they’ll match the advertised price.  The competitor’s ad must be local and current, and the product must be the identical item, brand name, quantity and model number.  Read more aboutTarget’s Price Matching Policy here.
  • Sign up for mobile coupons. Sign up to receive coupons via text message five times a month on your mobile phone.  To redeem, simply show the cashier the barcode.  Target Coupons via Text

  • Use coupons. Not only does Target accept manufacturer coupons, they can be used in conjunction with their store coupons as well.  Printable internet coupons are accepted.

Clearance to Look for @ Target During July

Toy Clearance: The BIGGEST deal at Targetin July is probably the 70% off toy clearance.   Toward the end of July, Target marks down a nice selection of clearance toys to 70% off.  They do this in order to make room for the new toys that are coming in for the holiday season. The markdown usually takes place the last week of July.

Remember, most stores markdown their toys on Thursdays, so that is the day the markdown will probably take place.   I do know of some stores that do the markdown on Wednesdays, so there is a chance that your store will do the markdown on Wednesday.   

 

Summer Clearance:   Another great section that goes on clearance is the summer section.   All of the items they brought in for summer will get marked down in July.  These items will go as low as 90% off!!     Here are the days the markdowns took place last year (just to give you an idea of when they may happen this year):

  • 70% off happened around July 13, 2014
  • 90% off happened around July 16. 2014

 

School Supplies:  July is a great time to buy school supplies, before you know it we will see the pack of the store filling up with lunch boxes, folders, crayons and more.  We should see some great sales as well as coupons for school supplies that can translate to FREE items.   Last year we saw FREE pens, Scotch tape, Sharpies, Rose Art items and more.

 

Patio & Garden Clearance:  The remaining patio furniture  and garden clearance should go down to 70% off sometime in July.    Last year most people saw these items go to 70% off the first week in July.     There is a very good chance we can see the same happen this year, they need to clear out the department so they can make room for all the school supplies.

Remember that data hack at Target in 2013? You can join in the Target Breach Settlement case and may be able to RECEIVE COMPENSATION.

If you shopped at Target between 11/27/13 and 12/18/13 and can prove that you suffered losses to your credit or debit card in the hack, you may be entitled to as much as $10,000. You must SUBMIT YOUR APPLICATION FOR SETTLEMENT before 7/31 and provide proof that your information was stolen during that time.

Even if you shopped at Target between those dates and can’t prove your data or identity being stolen, you may be able to get $30.

Send in your information to be included or excluded from the settlement before 7/31.
