Gas Prices + Grocery Price Hikes

I've been surprised lately at the price of everything going up. Gasoline has been around $3.00 per gallon for the past year or so. Now it's $3.50, some places a little lower. It is outrageous. And it's being reported that gasoline prices will be at $4.00 by the summer!

Groceries are no better. I used to be able to buy a week's worth of groceries (for 3 people) for about $100-$150. Now is seems $175-$200 is the norm.

So how do we beat the prices we are forced to pay?

There are 3 ways I save on gasoline. I combine errands, drive less and cut down on long trips. I also save up Fuel Perks from Giant Eagle and that seems to help a little bit.

With groceries, it can be much more challenging to save money. Here are my best suggestions:

  • Use coupons, match with sales and stock up on items you use regularly (or can donate)
  • Consider joining Costco or Sam's Club. They offer deals on everything from meats, to fruits, veggies, large cakes for $16, much more.
  • Use up what you have in your pantry. I'm always amazed what I find when I pull everything out of the pantry.
  • Same thing with your freezer. Pull everything out, throw out old items and use up the newer food.
  • Shop at Target and Walmart for groceries. I've found their prices on food a lot lower than grocery stores. For example, I bought Eggo waffles for $1.50 a box, while Giant Eagle was over $2.00 a box.
  • Cut down on buying convenience or prepared foods.
  • Consider planting a garden this coming summer- fresh veggies and fruit!
