Guest Post: How to Create Great Giveaway Tees

Thanks to Carol M. for sending this in!

It seems like everyone is tightening the belt these days, so when it comes to shopping for clothing for yourself, or even items to give as gifts, you may find that you’re working with a budget that has been greatly reduced.  And with graphic tees costing as much as $30 a pop (or even more), you might find that you can’t afford even the simplest items of clothing.  But don’t fret; there is a great way to get the tees you want, for yourself and your family and friends, at far less cost.  By learning to create your own graphic or decorative tees, you can save a ton and still enjoy the garments that you want to wear daily.  Here are a few ways to get started with tees that are great to keep or give away.

1.       Tees.  You’re probably thinking that the most expensive part of this undertaking will be the tees, but you might be surprised by how much you can save.  Standard tees will run you about $2-3 each if you order online, but you may have to buy bulk to get this price.  And you’ll pay a little more for special items like girly tees or super-soft jersey knit.  But considering how much you’ll save over retail, it’s well worth it to order online.

2.       Screen printing.  This option is the best for creating graphic tees, but it could also get kind of pricy, what with the cost of paint and screens.  Luckily, you can save a bit by making your own reusable items (frames, for example) and limiting your color palette.  You’re going to spend a little upfront, no doubt, but remember that you can use items over and over, effectively extending their value.  Look for online tutorials to make your own frames and learn screen printing techniques.

3.       Stencils.  This option is going to save you a lot over screen printing, but the flip-side of the coin is that the product may not be quite as good (due to bleeding around edges, etc.).  You can start by finding pre-made stencils at the craft store or online, and then using a sponge and fabric paint to transfer the designs onto your tees.  But you can also harness your own artistic ability by purchasing sheets of plastic at the craft store and cutting out your own graphic designs.

4.       Crafts.  Not all tees have to be graphic.  In fact, you’ll notice that some of the most popular trends these days include patches, beads, buttons, ribbons, and more.  So if you’re handy with a needle and thread, don’t hesitate to add some kitsch to your one-of-a-kind tees.  Women, in particular, will love tees with beaded necklines; shirts that double as accessories are very now.

5.       Online options.  If you’re not too keen on creating your tees by hand, simply visit one of several websites that allows you design a graphic tee and then order ready-made copies.  This will cost a little more than a DIY tee, but still less than buying retail.  Plus, some sites will even give you a percentage of sales, so if you don’t want to purchase them for everyone, simply send out a link to interested parties and rake in the dough.
