When I was young, my mom loved to read to me "Cinderella", "Snow White", "Sleeping Beauty" and all the classic fairytales. I loved all the stories but related to Snow White the best.

Snow White has to be my favorite fairy tale character and here is why. While she is a princess, she also is brave and strong. In the recent movie "Snow White and the Huntsman", she had to battle the evil queen and take back her kingdom. I also liked how she relates to nature and animals naturally gravitate to her.

As for more modern fairy-tale type stories, I think Fiona in Shrek is a great role model for girls. She wants to be her own person, even if it means turning into an ogre and facing all kinds of challenges. And instead of marrying the prince, she follows her heart and marries Shrek. Fiona facing obstacles and overcoming them is a great example for girls to follow.

These types of movies, like Snow White, Kiara (which you can rent from Redbox!), and in theatres now, Brave, give girls the tools to see their own power. These movies show that girls can make their own choices and create the life they want to live.

While I don't have a daughter, I have several nieces who are always looking for strong role models and I would recommend the Kiara movie especially to them.
